The Challenge Academy Trust

Senate partnered with The Challenge Academy Trust (TCAT) in their mission to decarbonise the school estate through the delivery of high-impact, low-carbon infrastructure upgrades across five schools in Warrington.

This project the design, installation, and commissioning of Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems alongside comprehensive heating infrastructure improvements. Working across Padgate Academy, Sir Thomas Boteler CofE High School, Broomfields Junior School, Meadowside Primary School, and Bridgewater High School (Lower), our team developed bespoke energy solutions tailored to each site.

Our scope of works included the drilling and installation of boreholes, the replacement of legacy heating systems, and the upgrade of plantrooms with new pipework, controls, and ancillary equipment. Alongside the mechanical infrastructure, we also carried out significant electrical upgrades – including the installation of LED lighting systems and electrical works required to support the GSHP systems.

A key component of the project was the upgrade of Air Handling Units (AHUs) and the Building Management Systems (BMS) across all five schools. These modern controls now provide enhanced visibility and efficiency in managing heating and ventilation systems, ensuring optimal energy performance and comfort for students and staff alike.

Senate Group delivered the project using in-house expertise across mechanical and electrical disciplines, enabling tight control over quality, programme, and health & safety compliance. Working in live educational environments, our approach was tailored to minimise disruption, with phased delivery and out-of-hours working where required to prioritise the student experience.
